Detective Joona Linna — recently returned from compassionate leave — reunites with hypnotist Erik Maria Bark in a search for a seemingly unassailable sadistic killer.

The Swedish National Crime Unit receives a video of a young woman in her home, clearly unaware that she’s being watched. Soon after the tape is received, the woman’s body is found horrifically mutilated. With the arrival of the next, similar video, the police understand that the killer is toying with them, warning of a new victim, knowing there’s nothing they can do. Detective Margot Silverman is put in charge of the investigation, and soon asks Detective Joona Linna for help. Linna, in turn, recruits Erik Maria Bark, the hypnotist and expert in trauma, with whom Linna’s worked before. Bark is leery of forcing people to give up their secrets. But this time, Bark is the one hiding things.
Years before, he had put a man away for an eerily similar crime, and now he’s beginning to think that an innocent man may be behind bars–and a serial killer still on the loose. . .

How different everything could be in another universe, all the lives we haven’t live.

And yet again Lars Kepler did not let me down. I think this is the biggest book in the series so far and yet, I still devoured it in two days. And that says a lot, me being a slow reader with full-time job and three small kids.

Joona Linna has been declared dead after what happened in the last book. Margot has been taken in to fill his spot. They are investigating a stalker who updates videos to Youtube about their chosen victims, videos they have recorded behind the windows without the victims knowing someone is there. Are they able to solve the crime without Joona?

There’s actually not much I can say without spoiling this book. But let me tell you, this mystery was as grim as any other ones throughout this series. It describes every little detail about how the crime has been done.
Yet it still leaves you with your investigator hat on, solving the crime as you continue alongside them. There’s so many questions rising all the time but not a lot of answers.

Jackie, the blind piano teacher, and her daughter Madde are just too precious. I’m amazed how nicely they had written this blind characters storyline.
The other ones were just as kickass as they have been before and Erik still works wonders with his hypnosis.

The plot is one that keeps you tightly glued to the book because you want to solve everything just as bad as they are trying to solve them in the book. I just didn’t want to put the book down and leave them just hanging in there, in the middle of everything. I had to finish it and figure out everything!
And the ending was not at all what I thought it would be. Not going to lie, my jaw hit the floor when everything started to click together.

All in all, this was one heck of a book, yet again! Can’t wait to continue on as soon as possible because that ending most definitely left me hanging and wanting more ASAP!
