An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former First Lady of the United States.

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America—the first African-American to serve in that role—she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her—from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world’s most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it—in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same.

For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.

5 brightest stars anyone has ever seen! Can I just buy this audiobook and listen to it forever?

I admire Michelle Obama so much. Honestly, I haven’t thought about how difficult the life of a president and their families truly is. But Michelle tells about it in all honesty.
Becoming is the story of her life. How she grew up, how she became Obama’s wife and how she became the First Lady, first First black lady. And it has not been easy.

All of their family had to endure so much trash from other people all throughout their time from first voting to the day they moved out of the White House. Probably even after that. But they rose above all of that. They didn’t get down to their level but they made so much good!

I’m still so stunned about everything I learned from this book. I can’t piece my thoughts together. But what I do know is that you should read Becoming. And most importantly, you need to read it as an audiobook. This felt so much more personal. Like you are out there grabbing a coffee with Michelle and she tells you about her life.
I just know I will be re-reading this many times in the future. It is about Michelle’s life, but at the same time it holds so many important messages to us all to learn.

  1. I’ve been wanting to read this book for so long now! It sounds amazing and I love bios that show the good and bad times from someone’s story so well that anybody can relate to them emotionally. Great review Hanna!
